New Battery
What should I know about buying and installing a new battery on a 2000 996 Carrera? Any gotchas on the install, like resetting computers?

Always use another battery to keep the vehicle powered up while changing the battery.
If you disconnect the battery, the code will require resetting. Code number should be on a card in the service book wallet.

You can also just plug a battery maintainer into the lighter socket to keep 12V into the ECU so the code settings are not lost.

Okay, the battery maintainer thing sounds like a good idea. Someone please give me the step=by-step procedure for doing this. What kind of battery can I use for doing the battery maintainer thingy? I will only have the old battery thats currently installed, and the new battery that I will buy. Sounds like I will need a third battery and some sort of cigarette lighter hookup that I will also have to buy. Where can I buy a connector for the cigarette lighter technique, and what kind of battery will suffice as a third battery for the battery maintainer?...a little 12volt radio type battery? Someone please give me the steps for doing this so I don't F it up.
Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: etc.... Battery changing for dummies 101. lol |

Easy to do. First buy this device from our host ($58.75): Pelican Parts - Product Information: 980-611-981-00-OEM
Then, plug one end into a 110V source and the other into your cigarette lighter outlet and you have 12V feeding into the 996 electrical system. When you swap batteries, the 12V remains on and no codes ar lost. You should use one of these battery maintainers/tenders anyway unless you are driving your car regularly or you will find that the battery drains down remarkably fast because of all of the systems that remain on "standby" in these cars even when the ignition is off and the key removed. Good luck.

Excellent tip!...a trickle charger. I will get one. This is probably all I need, and not a new battery, because I HAVE noticed how the systems slowly drain the battery when not driving the car every day and I thought I needed a new battery. What I really only need is this trickle charger. We'll see. Thanks.
