996 K&N 57-7000 Air Intake
I'm considering installing a 57-7000 air intake from K&N on my '99 996. Is this a bad idea from the start or worth doing?
![]() Sorry if this is a repost I tried searching for this part number and couldn't find anything. Ryan |

I thought I'd chime in on this one.
Our project 996 had a K&N panel filter installed in the airbox when we got it. I have found virtually no difference between it and the stock paper element. It may be a little louder with the K&N, but that's it. As for the cone filter type setups, you really need to look at how well the filter is isolated from the heat in the engine compartment. I'm not familiar with how K&N does it for the 996. (It looks like we don't carry it) However, the stock airbox atually IS a cold air setup when you look at how it works. We recently accquired a cold air setup from Fabspeed for our car with shielding that almost covers the whole engine under the hood. I'm currently in the process of testing it. I'll chime in when we have some results. |

The biggest concern that a 996 owner should be is wet or dry when it comes to filters such as the K&N.... The MAS unit following the air-intake is very dainty when it comes to oil, the MAS can be damaged easily and it not a cheap thing to replace, only in labor of course, look up the MAS on the Pelican site to verify yourself.
I would recommend going with a dry unit to ensure you don't damage your sensor. Good Luck, |
