Backfire on start

I've got a 03 Boxster S that runs perfect except occasionally during start it runs a little rough, backfires, emits a small amount of smoke out the back. I turn the key off, restart and it generally runs fine.

I would consider that a potentially serious problem & find the cause as soon as possible
