996 w/ craked heads
i'm looking at a 99 996 w/ 97k and a tip. the collant is mixing in with the oil and he suspects it has cracked heads. othewise the car is in nice shape. any thoughts on the cost to have a non dealer shop fix it and do any other "while you are in there" items (RMS?)

walk or better run away, neither he nor you have any idea what is causing the inter mix, more than likely there's a lot more wrong than the head, unless your getting it for $2,000 or less, a new engine will be some where between $12,000 to $18,000 maybe more.

Yup - unless you're doing all the work yourself a new engine installed will cost you pretty much $20K. For a used engine maybe knock $5K off...if you can find a good one.
Good, running first year 996 can be had for $16K almost anywhere. You're upside down before you start. Look around for the post where the Corvette V8 is installed in a 996 though. That may be your best bet. ( no scratch that, just buy a good, running 996).

Do you know for sure the heads are cracked -- .i.e have they been pulled and verified.
My concern with the 99's are the cracked cylinder sleeves. That's a whole different ballgame there. Even said -- If you have had intermix -- you should strongly consider replacing all wear surfaces -- which means cracking the crankcase and replacing the bearings. Mike
