Replacing AOS, is this the one?
Hi,
I am going to replace the infamous Air Oil Separator in my 2001 996 convertible. The car is smoking like it's burning, and the symptoms all point towards the AOS. Question is what I need to buy and where? Only part I found here at Pelican is this one: Pelican Parts - Product Information: 996-107-080-54-OEM Or part no 996-107-080-54-OEM if the link doesn't work. It looks cheaper than I would have anticipated, so I wanted to double check here before I order it. Any advice would be very appreciated! Thanks, Johan

Is the replacement AOS an improved part or will it eventually fail like the old one?

I believe it is an improved version but have never had to replace one. Google it and you should get a number of past posts on the subject that will confirm the changes made to the part over the years. The early versions were particularly prone to failure due to weaknesses in the design.

Thanks, that looks more like the right one. It's only one of them, right?
Regards, Johan

Since you have a convertible, you already have less access to the engine from the top. To replace the AOS, you should drop the engine a few inches to increase access and also remove the coolant expansion tank and the driver's side manifold.
It's kind of tricky to replace. I jhave a write-up on how to do it. Email me and I'll send you the info. [email protected] |
