996 ticking
I have been studying this issue for over a year now and I am fairly curtain the sound i here is a lifter. My 99 C2 set for six months due to a broken foot. I would run it once a week during this period. when was finally able to drive it there was a tick or rattle at start up, no ECL or codes, in the past i would here a similar sound at start up that would last a second or less, I assumed it was a lifter. I have dissected the oil filter and it is spotless no debris at all. I have also replaced the timing chain tensioners. and still have the noises. I am putting two kids through collage at the moment and I can't rationalize spending allot of $$$ on one of my toys but the car has been sitting long already so I am thinking of towing it to a shop for a diagnosis. I live on the Monterey peninsula is there a reputable shop in my area or is the dealer my best bet?

It sounds like a lifter. Have you driven the car until it is warmed up 10-15 miles? I wouldn't spend $$ until it has had a good drive.
