Starter screech - take apart a starter?

Has anyone successfully taken apart a 996 starter to fix (the somewhat common) screech on start up noise? Any advice here?

You do not need to take the starter apart, but you do need to remove it from the car.

The Bendix drive on the nose of the starter is either dirty or corroded, or both; and is sticking partially engaged with the flywheel, causing the noise. The Bendix assembly needs to be cleaned and they lubricated with DuPont spray dry Teflon lubricant, which will not attract dirt but will keep the assembly moving freely. You can find the lubricant at most home centers like Lowes.

I know it's the starter, I've got it off the car and it makes the noise when hooked to 12v.

I took the starter apart, cleaned it up, and it works fine, no noise. The grease at the tail end of the armature was dried out, and the bendix seemed to be a little draggy.

I had to make some clips to hold the (4) brushes in place to get it back together, but it was all straightforward and simple.
