repost, wrong forum before: 996 C2 vs C4S? garage queen issues? (sorry guys)

i did not even see this forum, i apologize for previous post on the 911 tech forum.

looking at 2002-4 w/ 40-60k mi 996, leaning toward C4S; are there any special issues to look for in the low mileage cars?

this car will be a garage queen. highway miles and touring the hills and mountains off in the distance. it will sit for long periods of time, six weeks several times a year. i had been led to believe that 996s could handle sitting, but some of the posts i have seen here lead me to believe that a 911 may be a bad idea for my use case. do 986s sit better? thoughts?

911s are meant to be driven, not parked!

What is your concern? Battery drain? There are other issues with cars that are driven infrequently that pertain to the IMS bearing failure or cylinder head cracks. If that is what you mean, then the 996, 986, 997, 987 up to late 2009 could all be in the same boat to some degree. The early 996's 99-01 and early Boxsters 97-01 are all similar with thin cylinder castings and can overheat and/or have a cylinder head failure and oil/coolant intermix which could ruin the engine. They all have IMS bearings and can be replaced up to 2004 and maybe some of the early '05's. From '06 to late '09 you pretty much want to have a Porsche warranty for the engine. For normal periodic use and no track time, I would think a nice 996 with the IMS bearing upgrade would work well for you. As always, a PPI is good insurance from a shop that knows what to look for with the water cooled cars. There are all kinds of opinions, so you need to do some research and decide what works best for you. Good hunting.

i routinely work overseas for a month to six weeks, and i am single. the car shall sit. should be moving near sugarland w/in 6 months, maybe a bro could help me out and drive my car once a week . i have been researching this purchase since i bought my first 944na almost 20yrs ago, i am aware of the usual issues.

no, i am concerned abt the refrain i see repeated: "and don't let it sit!"; hoping for opinions from ppl who have garage queens, or have bought them, or have friends who own them. i am going to pay top dollar for a car w low mileage in excellent condition, so if it is a bad idea, then i will wait until after i quit traveling; or, i might buy a normal mileage in good condition for now. thanks

Wow! I also live in Sugar Land Texas! Yeah, I will drive your Porsche while you are away! Your desire sounds like my story. I bought a garage Queen a year and a half ago. I purchased a 2000 Carrera with 20,000 miles on her in March 2011.
It was a 2 owner car. The original purchaser put 10,000 miles on her in 2000, then sold the car. The second owner put 10,000 miles on her in 10 years!

So I picked up a car that had service records at my local Porche dealer, Momentum Porsche in SW Houston, near Sugar Land. The first thing I did was change ALL fluids.
The Momentum records showed that the last oil change was 3 years prior! Ouch. Maybe the 2nd owner had the oil changed elsewhere? There were a few problems with the car. The rear running light was out. Turned out to be a bad wiring harness, nothing $400 couldn't fix. Then when 30,000 miles rolled around, I had the 30K service for $1100. The dealer found that the low tone horn was non-functional and the radiator fans were not turning on at low speed. Got that fixed. Then I did the LN Engineering IMS retrofit and RMS fix along with the clutch. It is in really good shape now. Nothing wrong at all, showroom clean.
