I'm new to the 996 world but I have a 87 930 and love it, I've been reading up on the 996 turbo's and have looked at 2 but got a bad vibe from both owners and both had body kits and that tells me damage, neither was worth getting a PPI.
Recently another came on the market at a dealer and he says that the RMS and IMS bearing had been changed ?????? I thought that the 996 turbo's didn't have an IMS, is the dealer wrong or have I got it wrong. Is there an IMS on the turbo 996's, can someone set me straight on this. Thanks Finn

My understanding is that neither the Turbo nor the GT3 have an IMS. Although they have the same displacement, it is a different engine than the one found in Carreras/Targas. I believe the case is actually similar to the 993.

The Turbo uses a unique engine, called "the Metzger engine" after its designer, which does have a lay shaft, but it is entirely different than the M96/97 engines and quite bullet proof. If the dealer says they have updated the IMS, it either is not a Turbo, or the dealer does not know what they are talking about..............which is not uncommon for many dealer's sales staff.
I'd ask to see the service records for the car.

JFP is right as always.
Sales guy may have confused RMS for IMS -- and Turbos do have RMS leaks which is only an issue from the perspective it's a pain to get to. check the service records, Mike
