IMS - Inspection Camera

Hey Guys,

I went to Harbor Freight tools and purchased an Inspection Camera $179.00. I was able to use the two inspection ports (I have a tiptronic) to view my RMS and IMS. No Leaks!

Mine are perfectly clean. This is a great idea to see whats going on maybe once a month without ripping everything apart... what do ya think?

Just below the RMS... no leak there.

The Bottom of the IMS perfectly clean:

It's great! Plus, I had a dealer telling me that my car was leaking....lol!!

I can't wait to show them these pictures. This thing even makes movies.

I'm going to use it once a month or maybe do it during oil changes. Check for metal in the filter and take a picture. Once I see a leak, I'll take it in.

Not to burst the bubble but the IMS doesn't have to leak externally to be failing. I do like the idea of the scope and it comes in handy for a lot of things. It appears handy for the '05's particularly to view the size of the bolt head for the two different IMS bearings (new vs revised up to early 2009).

TonyTheTarga,

For 179 bucks the camera rocks. It records video, takes pictures, and you can use a SD card for extra storage.

As far as the IMS, I agree it's no guarantee but it could show early signs of leakage from the RMS or the IMS plus doing the oil filter checks.
I did this because I had a dealer trying to tell me that the car was leaking so I had to replace the RMS and the IMS (2800 bucks) + a 6 year service (1600 bucks). I change my own plugs, belt, oil, and necessary filters thank you!

They showed me fresh oil inside the inspection covers(Again, I have a TIP). Funny, there isn't a drop of oil inside the case... hmmmm

I'm going to sleep well knowing it's pretty clean in there. I may buy a IMS guardian.

I'm not saying it wasn't a good buy, just saying not to rely on a leaking IMS cover. Even if it does leak that has nothing to do with the condition of the bearing.
I think the scope saved you money for the other things you mentioned. My comment was intended as printed, an IMS cover leak has no direct relationship to the condition of the IMS bearing.
