Porsche Carrera Project: Camshaft Swap and Valve Train Repair

Anyone got any questions on Project - Camshaft Swap and Valve Train Repair for your Porsche 996 / 997 Carrera?

Here's a back link to the original article: Pelican Technical Article: 16-ENGINE-Camshaft_Swap_and_Valve_Train_Repair

I have a 1999 996 and am hearing the rattle on cold start. I have read that it could be the tensioners. I've seen threads on IMS and Camshaft upgrading but haven't seen any threads that address just the chain tensioners (3). Is it possible to just swap out the 3 tensioners? I'm assuming I'll need to drain the oil but am wondering if this can be done without the special cam shaft locking tool?
Thanks,
Mark

You do not need to drain the oil, but you will loose some oil out of each tensioner, so be prepared to top up. It is never a good idea to pull the tensioner unless the engine is locked at TDC and cam locks are used.

tensioner replacement

Just one more question to clarify. If I lock the crankshaft at TDC can I replace the tensioners 1 at a time without the camshaft locking tool without issue?

I wouldn't.
