A good article.
There is an old VW trick to prolong the life of the CV joints - swap left and right axles. Is this applicable to the 996 as well? The reason I ask is that I have a 'drone' on gthe highway. No clicking, just a rumble. Might be tires which are PS2s.

This drone is more than likely a wheel bearing noise. They are fairly common for causing the drone like a bad tire. It can sound like you have swamp mudder 4wd tires on there sometimes. If it is a bearing you can notice a slight increase in the sound intensity when turning the steering wheel slightly while driving at a speed where the drone is apparent. The wheel bearing will become noisier when UN-loaded, meaning that if you steer to the right it is a right side wheel bearing, and vice versa. I have yet to see an axle cause a drone BUT I learn something new every day!! Let us know how it goes
