996/997

I have noticed that many dealers are selling 996's referring it as a 2005 model. Does anyone know if Porsche offered the both the 996 and the 997 as a 2005 model or are these dealers misinforming the public?

Both models were sold in 2005.

Yes, it appears that way. The difference between the 996 and 997 is very noticeable both cosmetically and mechanically. Some unwarry buyers are getting the 996 and don't realize the 997 was available for probably the same price. Interesting. I have both and prefer the 997.
