help with 1999 tranny

i met a guy that has a 99 porsche. (BTW, i am a 911/930 guy. i know nothing about the new cars). he told me his car shifts very quickly up to 5th in automatic mode, but it works fine in the manual mode.
he took the car to a local shop and they put it on a machine and they told him he needs a new tranny for $10k.
do you think this is reasonable as far as an accurate diagnosis and a good price or should he go somewhere else for another opinion?

Not sure where his problem is??
The automatics shift to 5th as soon as possible if you are driving "normally" in auto. When it is in manual mode it will hold a gear until you shift it.

If you happen to come back to this have him disconnect the battery to reset the "adaptive" trans memory.

996 auto transmission won't change to 5th - 996 Series (Carrera, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Targa) - RennTech.org Forums

"... At present, after disconnecting the battery, the auto transmission has remapped itself to a city traffic cycle with gear changes to 5th @ 2000RPM and around 60km/h."
