Tires???

My 2001 Cab has a bad driver rear tire. so, questions: replace all 4 (don't want to as fronts are fine); recommends for a daily driver that gets "pushed" hard nearly every day (speed) but stays home in bad weather; should I let a local GM dealer mount the tires?? Appreciate any suggestions as dealer tires are about $100-150 over price at the GM shop.

Your new tires in rear will feel
Loose and not match the aging snd heat/cool cycles of old
Do yourself a favor and put a full set of Michelin factory spec size on
One of the best upgrades you can do

Replace the rears with a comparable tire to your fronts. You don't mention what you have and that could be important. The better the match, the better the experience. Personally I can't imagine buying tires at a Porsche dealer but many do. Whatever bakes your cake.

if you have only one bad rear tire then you might have another issue going on. The suspension is a multi-link and any damage or mis-alignment will cause uneven wear and possible other handling issues.

having said that, tires come in all types of wear and heat ranges and if you mix brands, which I wouldn't do, you need to find a compound that is compatible with the fronts. You might also want to look at the date on the tires. If they are 5 years or more from date of manufacture, there could be a failure risk at high speed. It's not always about how much tread you have. I concur that you should get 4 new tires and buy from Tire Rack or someplace like that. Better deal than the GM dealer but you'll also have to find a place to install them. Good independent service shops that deal with high end cars should do it. Ship the tires directly to the shop and drive in the car with old tires and drive out on new.

Thanks all for the replies. Got a set of rears to match the fronts from Tire Rack. Half the price of anyone else and I have a local I trust to mount and balance. The tire is leaking (slowly) from road "debris", Oklahoma pickups are quite notorious for "drop-off". Anyway, thanks all. Oh, fronts are only 9 months old w/ 3K and still very servicable.
