Advice needed on purchasing 72 911

Hi fellow Pelicans,

I have a friend looking to sell a 72 911 thats been owned for past 15+ years in socal. Its been non running though for 5+ years, not sure of story why yet. Its titled as 72, and has the oil door still to confirm. From what I can tell it has been updated with sc flairs, 6+7x16 fuchs, flag mirrors, has sunroof, wail tail, and short hood with bumper and fogs. Interior is not in the best of shape, and Im still unsure of the motor in it. I am told its complete with everything, trans/engine/etc just not running.

Any ideas what its worth or am I cutting the prices short?:
with zero to minimal rust? 10k?
with fair amount of rust? 8k?
With lots of rust? 6k?

Thanks guys.

Depends on Numbers matching or not T E or S
Then add $10,000 to your baseline for a good T, 20 for an E, 30 for an S

It's value lies in it being a 72 in original condition. As it sits, if the engine and transmission are numbers matching and original (MFI) then converting it back to a longhood 72 is possible, but would be quite expensive to have done. As it sits, IMO, it's a $10K car at best. Non-running could be 100 different things, 95% of them not particularly cheap..

It is now a shorthood with SC flares, so it most likely "looks" normal...

Thanks for the input! Hehe, oops I meant it has a whale tail on it. Yes, Gary is right. It looks updated with flag mirrors, short hood, etc.

Sunroof vs moonroof, is there a difference? Did all early cars have these two options? Im not sure if that was stock or not, since they did upgrade the flares and other parts of car to look like 80s 911.

Also depends on how they updated for the short hood and rear end. Some of these mods are easy to reverse, some require more work. SC flairs if done correctly would go aways toward a hot rod look. IF its a true 72 SR, I'd take it back to longhood look and then make the call about the flairs based on the final vision you want for the car.

I know, I was just being an ass about the typo. I should think before I type, LOL.

I think the buyer is in a nice position. He can avoid the shark feeding frenzy that might happen if it goes public, and it's been a socal car, so it's likely pretty sound.

Yep, if it's a valuable car he is after and he has $20-$30K to have someone do the work, for $10K he could come out ahead the way long hood prices are looking! To put possibly $5-$10K (from a good Indy doing the work) into it to get it into good running condition as it sits, it may still would be worth $20K to someone as a possible back to 72 rehab project or hot rod. I would buy it for $10K and take my chances..

Thanks for the input Gary. Thats what Im thinking too. I wouldn't mind just getting it running and driving it for awhile.

Also, how would prices change if he updated the motor? Again, Im not sure whats in it yet, but what if it has 3.0L in it? Would my price suggestions still be about accurate?

Again, it's highest worth would be 100% original and everything goes down from there. It will never be 100% original no matter how much you want to spend so it's up to you to decide what you want out of it. Just getting it running may be as simple as cleaning/flushing the fuel system and re-habing the brakes for hundreds of $$ to the engine needing work for thousands of $$, no way to know until you get into it, finding out WHY it was parked would be a start. Tranny bad? $5K. Engine bad? $8-$20K. IF you can get it streetable as she is cheap you can take your time to figure out what direction to go in, but even converted to a long nose hot rod, and done well, don't plan on ending up anything but upside down in it and you won't be disappointed.. I would say as a short hood SC update it is worth the least it ever will be.. good time to buy.

I'd hit it in a nano second for $10K. (if it's not a wreck, rusted out hulk, or has a rod hanging out).

But, I'd first ask the seller what he's looking or expecting to get. Gary is spot on though. Non running, unknown parking issue, and conversion to bumper car is it's least valuable position. But convincing the seller of that is the trick. Still, I'd be happy to be in his shoes.
