3.2 Flywheel and clutch question

Re-phrase - I think i'm mistaking the trigger wheel that is part of this flywheel for the starter ring gear, which goes on the clutch.. is that correct?

Sport Lightweight Flywheel 915 225mm Porsche Part Distributed By Patrick Motorsports

Later DME flywheels seem to have a separate, wider gapped trigger wheel. Just want to be sure this is correct for a 915 SC-Carrera conversion and nothing else is needed. I plan on using a Sachs Power clutch (72-86) from our host, add a stock starter ring gear, assuming that will be fine? -

Thanks!

Hey Gary,

That's the correct flywheel for a 3.2 Motronic paired with a 915. You're correct the trigger wheel is the flywheel "teeth" that look like they're for the starter gear to mesh with. They're actually flattened teeth that the DME reference sensor detects for ignition timing. The actual starter gear teeth are on the separate ring gear that mounts on top of the clutch housing, just like your SC.

If you want to take advantage of the opportunity for light weight clutch assembly, i'd instead consider the Kennedy Eng. Products clutch. It's much lighter than the Sachs aluminum unit. They make two types- aluminum housing with iron internal pressure plate or aluminum housing with aluminum pressure plate & a carbide friction coating. The all aluminum one is a really nice piece. Used to have one on my 3.2L racecar

Kennedy also makes puck style discs but they're actually just rebranded Clutchnet discs

20% off and free shipping is the usual winter sale from Clutchnet

As usual, a wealth of info Kevin! I contacted Kennedy for current pricing and availability of the 225mm Alu clutch "kit". I'm assuming it comes with everything but the clutch disc, asked them for pricing on those also. The Sachs with the ring gear added is $950+ but it comes with the disc and new TO bearing.. Of the Clutchnet dics, which would you recommend for my puny 225 RWHP car? I'm thinking the 4BS671 or 6BS671.

thanks again!

I think you'll only get the clutch from Kennedy and will have to buy a Sachs 915 release bearing separately from Pelican..

I would use the 4 puck disc with spring hub for your racecar. Since you shift fast in racing, the lighter the disc the better. The disc affects shifting because it's always connected to the transmission shaft via it sliding back and forth on the splines.

I had both the 4 puck and 6 puck spring discs in my racecar. I bought the car equipped with the 6 and when I did the last rebuild I had Kennedy re-puck the 6 for a spare. Bought a new 4 puck to use with the new clutch. Neither of them were overly touchy in terms of stalling the car. The ones that really stall the car are teh solid discs with no spring damper. So the clutch is binary- either on or off, no slipping in between.

No problem dude. Keep up the good work.

Make sure to get firm dates on delivery from both Kennedy and Clutchnet. Kennedy took forever to inspect my clutch and re-line the disc. Sat on it for like almost 3 months and all I ended up getting was the disc work since the clutch was still in decent shape, despite being an older model that he no longer made. Monte' was of course more than willing to sell me a new one. But I said thanks for the inspection service and i'll just keep using the old one a bit longer....

Clutchnet has been good sending out discs but clutches notsomuch. But my data point is only one clutch order. I ordered a 915 clutch a few years back and ended up cancelling it because they took forever to make it. I ordered it well in advance of when I actually needed it but still had to cancel to make sure I didn't stick myself w/out a clutch. Seems to me with such a large product offering for so many makes and models, they make most everything made-to-order.
