Audi Ur Quattro and 911sc

I was just curious on how many Pelicans own an Audi UR Quattro and a 911 or had a chance to drive the URQ and can comment on the 2 cars in terms of driving experience?

I had low mileage original 1983 Audi URQ that I sold last year at the spur the moment, because I had a difficult time sourcing parts from Germany and was always nervous driving it.

So a Norwegian Audi Dealer bought the car to display it in his dealer showroom.

To fill the void, I bought a 1980 911SC Coupe because I could drive it daily and not worry about findings parts. Also my father has a 1981 Targa, and he always claimed that the SC/Carrera was the best sports car to come out of the 80's

It has been a year, and although I love my 911sc, I still miss the Audi and regret selling it.

It was a different experience driving the URQ, the note the 5 cylinder engine played was fantastic and when the turbo kicked in, well it felt like a porsche

Interesting fact:In 1983 the URQ sticker price was more expensive then that of a 911SC

I've owned a couple of each and would pick the 911 over the quattro, every time. Mine were as nice as they come but the Audis did not drive nearly as well and were more expensive to maintain. The guy that thought up the hydraulic system on the quattros ought ot be shot. Ditto for the electrical system.

Even with a few modifications, they were only about half the car that the 911SC is...

Did you find the interior of the URQ a satisfying place to be in? One of the biggest selling points, to me, of the 911 is how beautiful and high quality the interior is. Not an unsatisfying moment in sight. Not sure I can say that about the URQ.

Not bad quality but the leather was not as durable. Some of the plastic was not as nice. The front seats weren't bad in comparison to the stock 911 seats but not as nice as the 911 sport seats. Not as much instrumentation, either. Sunroof was a lift-out design.

I really liked the Audis Recaro seats, can't say that 911 seats were better as they both huged you with bolsters. The URQ was obviously more roomier in the back and I liked the early chocolate brown leather interior and steering wheel.

Howerer the Porsche interior is so much better made. All the small bits and pieces, like the door cards, dash/console etc...

Driving the Porsche, I dont hear any creaks and cracks, the URQ interior was not put together as well..cheap plastic (sunvisors

Power steering fluid and brake fluid were shared from 1980 to 1987. So a minor PS leak could mean eventual loss of brakes.

About the most ridiculous thing in cardom.

Im not sure I agree 100%, the Porsche felt much better on twisties and turns, but I really liked the URQ on a nice straight road, especiially when the turbo kicks in...it really throws you back, you have the sensation that you are going much faster
Electrics are a nightmare, especially with the rabbit under dash fusebox, that I had

The US versions were rather pokey. Something like 160hp vs 210hp Euro.

They could be made to go faster but they still would get their headlights sucked out by an SC. This is the last one I sold, a few years ago. Slightly lighter than stock, different turbo, slightly higher boost and one of Ned Ritchie's SCCA cheater cams.

As a long-time Audi owner, including an Audi turbo car, I will say this:

I love my Audis. They do much well, and little poorly. They fit me and my driving style well. I daily drive an older Audi, and wouldn't trade it for anything. But the Porsche is a world apart from all those cars. The simplicity and the experience is completely head and shoulders above any Audi I've ever been in. And this includes a 1995 RS2. That RS2 was stupid-fast, and every bit an Audi.

But it's no Porsche.

I really like the UrQ, too. In Ocean Blue, please. And an RS2 in Nogaro. Might as well have both.

But neither car will ever replace my Porsche. It (or they) would only be in addition to.

I sold mine a few years ago, then bought my 82 sc. I had 3 different quattros.
I sure don't miss working on it all the time.
They are fun, but the 911 is more connected to the road, I'm my opinion.
I put an 87 5000 turbo quattro engine in, and stand alone efi, it was very fast.
But still understeered.
I discovered that Audi was not interested in supporting the original urq.

This is interesting reading for me. I would have thought a UR would have destroyed an SC on fast corners or damp/wet roads. I have an A4 quatro as a daily and my 911 for weekends but have always wanted a UR. I was under the impression you could tune a UR to be ultra competetive in historic racing? I know the car was produce in Europe until 89 or so. Are the later versions the ones to have?

They were produced up through 1991 and, yes, the last couple years were pretty good. Sadly, the US didn't get any of those.

A 911 is much simpler and all the better for that.

You can tune it for neutral steering - there are folks out there that sell components for that.

Yes, the Audi habit of selling off giant chunks of inventory for nothing, then scrapping the rest makes owning the older cars very difficult. That is why the 911 is very attractive - if there is a demand for parts, SOMEONE will make them! They might be expensive, but at least they are available. And so many more 911s were made in those years as compared to Audis.

Another Audi fanatic here. I've never owned but have driven a UR Quattro. (I'd still add one to the garage if I could ever find a decent one. I thought it was great fun.) Not sure I can classify one as more fun than a 911 or not - that would require lots of additional testing!

My daily drivers are older Audi's, and they do most things very well. I really enjoyed the many years (~20) I had my old Audi Fox. (Somebody once said it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow.)

However, my 911 is still the most fun I've had with an automobile (both fixing and driving) in a long time...

Equals.

You're on a primarily Porsche forum. Coming from Audi/VW in order to scratch my Porsche itch I can say both are great cars. I dare say the Audi is now more collectable. Driving experience is much like asking the best way to take your steak; tastes will vary.

Just curious, how much is the going rate at this condition nowadays? I would dream to have one due to its desirability and do a rally tribute.

A good friend of mine has two, one with a 20 valve turbo engine.
The other is an ABT prepared one, that he wants to sell soon.
I think it only has about 65k miles on it.
It is in N. Calif. If anyone really wants one. No too $ either.

I sold my 1983 last year, which was 100% stock with 56k original miles and the desired stock 1985 Ronal wheels for 15k

the thing is, I can buy a 911 tomorrow and the next if I wanted to, but thats not the case with the URQ.

I would really consider trading my 1980 SC coupe for a really nice URQ, even though the SC are valued $5k + more

there are probably less then 100 URQ's left on the road in N. America

P.S

JR, your URQ looked awesome with the Euro Bumpers and Headlights. Did you have the rear euro bumper pushed in as well?

my favorite color
