Fuel Tank

Pulled my fuel tank today and found a bit of rust in the front lip where water probably soaked into the tank seal, the coating on the bottom is pealing too.

I am thinking of stripping the tank and coating it with por-15. Has anyone used the por-15 undercoat? Seems like using both products together would be ideal.

Do a search here and in the Paint and Bodywork forum. Lots of info.

My tank had some rust around the lip. I stripped it all down to bare metal and used POR15. Holding up well 6 years later. If you decide to use the POR15, it only works when applied to prepped bare metal.

Very nice looking! Did you coat with anything after the initial coat of POR15?

I'm taking mine to bare metal this weekend and have ordered a POR15-like product made by KBS Coatings. I will see how it looks when finished, but was thinking of going over that with the Wurth high-build underseal sold by our host. If you are unaware of the tip to use a Harbor Freight oscillating tool to remove the old undercoat, look it up - it works great!

Any thoughts on just doing half of the tank? The top half of my tank is in really good shape with no rust or pealing. Maybe just a half resto would be adequate?

In all likely hood it would probably be just fine only doing the bottom. But, I am guessing after you are finished you are going to wish you had done the top and will. Second doing the whole tank isn't much more work than doing half. Lastly, you do know what might be lurking under the old finish.

The photo is of the tank in the silver POR15. I used POR15s etching primer and gave it a topcoat, but no photos.
