996 (986) Headlight MKI difference

Does anyone know when and why there were different versions of the headlights? Don't mean differences between 996 and 986, the title might be misleading.

Some headlights had painted inner shroud and some didn't... Was that changed over the years? I now it was done on the Amber lights, not sure about the clear lights.

I just realized there was a difference, but have always wondered why some headlights looked better than others, aside from the clearness of the lens... Did the clear lenses come with painted shrouds too?
