I am currently looking to buy my first Porsche. I want to get my feet wet, and I am considering a 996tt. Does anyone have any thoughts about this - would it be a good start? Also, what are your thoughts on 6sp Manual vs. Tiptronic? I cannot wrap my head around the idea of anything but a manual transmission on a Porsche! Is that a stupid way to think? Any advice and guidance would be greatly appreciated.

911 turbos of any year are a good choice, but as mspirito said, you should go drive a few different cars and decide for yourself which one you like best. Personally I will never own an automatic. They're also going to be harder to sell and usually go for a little lower price.

A lot depends on if your porsche will be a daily driver. If it will be, and you have to deal with heavy stop and go traffic, the tip will work better. If this is not an issue, the manual is the way to go. I owned a tip for a couple of years. Absolutely great 996 but I sold it to get back into a manual. Way more fun especially since traffic is not an issue for me.

Thanks ChemMan - it will be a daily driver but I don't deal with traffic. I am def leaning toward Manual.

There are some nice looking ones on the 996 turbo forum on rennlist right now. Might be worth a look. Also saw one on 6speedonline.

996s are some of the best values in the market right now. i'd get one that is as stock as possible, perhaps even a gt2 garage queen. these are such a great deal and should go up in value if miles are (kept) very low. here's a x50 turbo that's very very inexpensive:

@rayng - I agree! That 2002 is a great looking car. i have come across it several times. Unfortunately, it is out of my price range.

They don't get a whole lot lower in price than that. Unless maybe you buy one with high mileage. That looked like a great deal for a low mileage X50.

@Hunt3R - Don't get me wrong - I DO think it is a good price on that particular car, unfortunatly it is out of my budget. I am more than likely going to have to start out with high mileage car for my first.
