996 Engine Numbers

Hi-
I've a 1999 Carrera- chassis # WPA0AA2999XS620195. Legend has it the original engine suffered the IMS failure. The engine in the car now is serial # M96/01AT66X66755.
Legend has it that the owner when the bearing failed, replaced the engine with a factory crate engine. Mechanics have suggested the motor mounts are from a 997. Can anyone help me find out more of the current engine's origin?
Thanks.
Bob

That's a 99 engine (X marks the spot!). Does the engine serial number in the ECU (read with durametrics) match the physical number on the engine? If it was a factory engine replacement under warranty there is supposed to be documentation and or a label placed in the cars manual in the service records section. That was the proper way they did it - unless the swap was done by an indy who just sourced an engine somewhere. If your engine serial number in the ECU data area matches with the number on the block odds are that the engine wasn't changed OR a dealer did the change and properly recoded the ECU to reflect the new engine number - but still - this new engine number should have a sticker/info label in your manual to reflect the change if it was done properly. What evidence is there to suspect an engine change? Don't go by the engine mounts as someone may have installed 997's either by accident or they got a deal on them as there is little difference between the 996 and 997 parts.

The "AT" in the number indicates that it is a factory reman engine.

And...I believe that the "AT" engines have a non-serviceable IMS bearing. (bigger single row type not removable without engine dismantle)

That would depend upon the year of the rebuild, anyone built after 2004 will carry the non-serviceable IMS.

Thanks to all.
I visited a local (Seattle) dealer- and found out that the factory supplied engine carried number 66WO4801- not the current engine. They were not able to search info by engine number- someone must . . . . .?
I'm intrigued by the "Durametrics" information, and after perusing the net, imagine this is proprietary to Porsche- and that my OBD2 diagnostic won't work on my car. Where is the port?
I'm going to schedule a service appointment with local service provider, and look forward to some additional information.
Additionally- this car had been a tremendous adventure. I've put approx. 6000 miles on it, in a spirited familiarization and haven't needed to add any fluids- no spots on the floor, and lots of smiles on the driver.

Diagnostic Tool for Porsche | Durametric

The OB2 port is by your left knee cap just under the dash above the fuse box. You push the cable into the female port on your car - plug the USB jack into your laptop and start the software. Select year and model of car and then scan for codes. You can then check other info as well as reset codes. Check their site for more details. There are also knock off's from China on ebay. (buyer beware)
