Cleaning the engine compartment?

What's the safest way to clean the engine compartment in a 997TT? What needs to be covered up before spraying an engine cleaner? What cleaner do you guys use?

Tedious job. I save all my old socks. I impregnate the socks with Spray 9 and stuff my hand in the sock and go to it. Sometimes one sock over each hand works better, sometimes two socks over my hand works. I avoid any spray liquid directly as I am bound to screw up an electrical connection. Pretty plastic covers I remove and wash in the garage tub, dry and spay with Lexol Vynolex-it disappears after a few hot runs but provides a degree of temporary satisfaction.

Thanks Uwon! So you don't use a pressure washer at all?
