1999 996 C4 Engine Removal

I just bought my first water cooled 911
I am excited about getting it running right as it now has a probable
cracked cylinder head ...
As I will be working on the ground with jacks I would appreciate any advise from someone who has been there and done that...
My main concerns are 1. How difficult is it to disconnect the drive shaft from the front of the trans. ? I could not find a tech forum that explains the process
But when mentioned in passing is described as "easy" but then goes on to say "with the special tools" What special tools will I need for the job ??
Also is it really "easy " ?
2. What type of jacking system will work best ? I have a 4 ton Milwaukee jack that pretty much works on everything , balancing the engine on there is my main concern
Or should I buy a "Motorcycle type jack, seems that they will not raise up high enough ?
Another choice for lifting would be a hydraulic lift table from Harbor Freight
3. Should I remove the trans first and then the engine or should I go for the whole enchilada ?
4. As the intake stands tall It seems that I will need to raise the car very high to get the engine out from underneath ... If I do this with 2 jack stands then the engine
will be at a steep angle to get the jack under...
Should I lower the engine first at a low height and then jack the car up after it is out ?? Is this going to be a PITA or the way to go ?
All impute and sage advise is much appreciated ...thanks to all and Happy New Year ! Rich CA
PS I last thought ... One article recommeded removing the trans. , exhaust and intake first before removing the engine ...is this the solution to the height problem or just un-nessesary ?

People regularly pull the engines out of these cars using nothing more that a couple jack stands and a floor jack or lift table. Pulling the trans first can make the engine easier to handle, but they can both be pulled at the same time:

The folks in these forums are absolutely amazing. I'd been wondering the same thing if I ever. Red to do this. How high should the jack stands go to do this well? I'll definitely be checking Harbor Freight for the jack table.

Thanks to all of the generous people who read and answer questions here and elsewhere.

I hate to say "as high as possible", but that is the case. The actual height of the engine varies with model and equipment somewhat, but you should be looking at getting the car up on jack stands that extend 18-20 inches to clear the worst case scenario. It can be done on lower stands, but you may have to remove more exhaust components and possible remove the rear bumper for clearance.
