winter garage time questions
Ok! I've procrastinated so long winter caught me without winter tires for my 2005 996 C4S, not that I would ever drive it in "real" snow. Not that the car couldn't do it but, frankly, it scares me(in a good way!) on dry roads So here's the problem: it is going to sit for several weeks at a time in the garage during snow covered roads and super cold times(thanks to NEB. winters). I have read the Bentley book about trickle charge and searched this forum and Renntech for answers on: On start-up after a few weeks do I need to worry about pre-lubing without starting by removing fuel pump fuse/relay? Is it better to just let it sit or start it up like once per week and let it idle to keep things circulated? I have read it is not good to let these cars idle a long time? I know the "hard core" types are going to say "buy the winter tires and wheels and drive it", but looking for other options/advice.
Thanks in advance for your input. |

Before you put it away, change the oil and filter, fill the tank with fuel and add StaBil. clean the car inside and out, attach a quality battery maintainer, and then let the car sit until spring shows up. It will start without problem and thank you for not periodically starting it during storage.

Thanks JFP. So if we get weather break and I want to drive it after two to three weeks of sitting is there anything special to do?

Personally, I wouldn't take it out until the winter is over.

Store it, give it a great cleaning and change the fluids. put the battery on a trickle charger. You won't be disappointed. I've see horror stories.

After you put the STABIL in a full tank, run it around the block to get it inside the engine.
Overfill the tires to MAX pressure listed on the sidewall, per the Porsche Owners Manual. Leave your self a note about this in the car for the Spring. I also leave my trunk 'popped', along with the battery maintainer hooked up, just in case the battery dies from a power outage or otherwise. Not fun trying to get into your trunk to charge/change a dead battery when the 'frunk' is locked shut. After all is said and done, that baby should fire right back up when you're ready. Been doing it for years!

When I have let the Carrera sit for a couple months. the tires get a flat spot.
I over- inflate them a couple extra pounds and at least once a month I put the 2 amp charge overnight. Works for me. |
