Driver side lock, not locking
good day everyone,
I have an 01 996 and today the door would not lock using the key. The remote lock stopped working a few months ago and I will need a new key per the local Porsche dealer. Any advice on fixing the issue myself? Car starts and runs but the key once in the door lock turns freely to the right and left. thank you C |

There are a few reasons for this that may be one or all of the following (you weren't specific enough so I'm going to bombard you with info):
1) The blade portion of the lock tumbler is probably broken at it's base. This requires complete disassembly of the outer door handle, and the part is not available through the dealer. You need to buy a complete assembly from the junk yard and cobble together one handle from two. 2) The central locking quit because the fuse on the alarm brain is probably blown. Remove the driver's seat, remove the alarm brain from the floor (quarter turn fastener), and replace the 15A fuse. If there is water damage you may need a whole alarm brain. Good luck. |

The door locks take a lot of abuse - for a DIY illustrating the removal of the locking mechanism, click here.
If the lock is turning freely with no resistance, it's sounding more like the lock tumbler itself has failed, unfortunately. |

The lock tumbler doesn't fail. The cast piece that connects the blade to the tumbler housing is what fails.
See my response above. |
