2003 996 chirping sound

Hi
I hear a periodic chirping(hard to say if it's from the front or rear) mostly before the car is warmed up while in motion. Happens when turning left or right, but also immediately when the accelerator is pressed. Only lasts for a few seconds but happens frequently and sounds exactly like a 'chirp chirp chirp' sound and can be quite loud. Also doesn't happen all the time but is very annoying.
I suspect a wheel bearing but looking to get some possible other causes from anyone that has experienced a similar problem.

Thanks

Dave

How many miles? Could be water pump or belt tensioner roller.

Just had the water pump replaced. Noise was happening before and and continues after the replacement.
Car has 150k kilometres which is about 90k miles
Its not a constant sound...comes for a few seconds, that its gone.

Very strange.

Hi Xyxxxy

If the water pump was just replaced, I would second Tonythetarga, the chirping noise sounds like it might be the serpentine belt tensioner.

Check how tight your spark plugs are.
A loose plug will also cause random chirping sounds too.
Costs nothing to check...

It is so linked to steering and rotational properties i have to think it is suspension or wheel based.
I have to think if it was plug based it would be not linked to steering.

Having said that....I dont have clue so everything is worth a try

Replace your serpentine belt and check the tensioner.

You were right. Was a loose plug. It was completely black from exhaust gases.
Changed a couple of coils at the same time.
So simple but I would have never guessed that was the problem.

Thanks BoxsterSteve
