4S Tranny removal

Can anyone tell me If I can remove the tranny from man 02 4S without removing it with the engine? Local Porsche /BMW mechanic is telling me they must come out together. Planning to upgrade IMS but I don't want to make it any harder than it has to be.

I can be done. The front drive shaft moves out of the way. You will need to support the rear of the engine. make a support bracket and bolt it to the sway bar mounts. You will also need to tilt the engine down about 2" to reach the 12:00 bolt.

Thank you. I ordered a Benchley's manual and will read it over a few times prior to starting but that sure sounds simpler!
