Undercarriage rattle
Hi-I have a 99 996 with 92 k on the odometer. Recently it has begun to make a distinct audible rattle when going over rough pavement. I think its from the rear. I plan to get it up on a lift and inspect it myself before going to a shop. What to check and look for??
Thanks in advance for any answers and advice. |

These 996's are known for the cat converter elements breaking free on the inside. They rattle. Check that first. Check your wheel torque as well, could be a loose wheel. Chances are its the converter. They can't be fixed, so you'll need to replace them if that's it.

Thank you Tony!
It turned out to be a very different source for the noise that I had imagined. The intake air box rests on 2 prongs that fit into rubber socket grommets that are inserted into holes in the rear crossmember. The grommets were missing, and the air box was dancing around causing the rattling noise. |
