Maine Yankee goes to see the Dragon

Went to see the Dragon last Thursday-First, we visited the Arboretum and the Crafts Center in Ashville NC, had a nice meal and set off for Robbinsville NC the next morning. Got started on the curvy part about ten am-it was over way too soon! But not soon enough for my wife! Its impossible to drive this road without total concentration, so no Dragon photos. The 99 996 without PSM was great-just point it where you want it to go and it does the rest! The leaves are down at this time of year-good for seeing further around the curves.
Returned to Robbinsville via the Cherohala Skyway. There were sections with a thick coating of salt on the road at the highest elevations, so I headed for the car wash as soon as we arrived back in Robbinsville. Time for a cold beer-right? Wrong! Robbinsville and the surrounding county are dry! Aaagh! No one told me or I could have figured out something.
Photo of an overlook on the Cherohala Skyway below, sorry that it is sideways.

Very nice. Definitely want to visit the Dragon myself sometime. Looks like you enjoyed it, minus the beer.

So very cool! Looks very beautiful this time of the year. I'm sure even more beautiful during the spring/summer months.

The problem is that the nicer the weather, the more crowded it gets - especially on weekends. About 5 years ago I went on a Tuesday in August and the amount of traffic made it a disappointment. Northbound I was crawling along behind a senior citizen on his Harley Hawg who was apparently was concerned that he might drag his running boards going around the turns. The secondary state/county highways I traveled to and back from Deal's Gap were a whole lot more fun.

Ah, yes the warmer weather always brings out the crowds. That is the unfortunate thing. Well, for this time of the year though it is still very beautiful. Maybe when I plan my trip I should try for right before spring.
