1999 996 engine oil leaks question
Hi, like I wrote in another post, I just took out the engine and tranny from my 996 and I would like to get rid of all oïl leaks. Beside the RMS and IMS cover and a O-ring on the passenger side fitting, I had a couple more. I included photos. I suppose they all have the same problem? I would appreciate any help.
Thank's in advance. ![]() ![]()

It's hard to tell from your pictures. The trouble with an oil leak is it usually spreads all over the bottom of your vehicle or around a surrounding area, making it hard to determine where the source is. Start by following the oil; you will notice some of the oil on the engine is darker and dirtier; this is the oil furthest from the leak. Follow the oil toward the cleaner area, sometimes even spotless with just a coating of light colored oil. You could also clean up all the problem areas and keep an eye on it for about a week or so to see if you can find where the source is originating from.
Hopefully some other Pelicans will chime in with input for you as well. If you need help with anything else be sure to check out our articles here: Porsche 911 (1998-2012) Technical Articles - Porsche 996 & Porsche 997 - Pelican Parts. Good luck! |

Thank's a lot Luccia. I suspected the spark plugs tubes o'rings that I ordered from you. I think that changing them all will solve the problem.
I took a chance to post about that just in case these engines would have all the same problems. Thank's again

1999 have spark plug tubes that tend to leak as they get older, similar to oil return tubes on air cooled engines. Your third picture appears to be a leaking tube. Check them all you will see oil pooling in the tubes if they are leaking. You were going to do plugs anyway right? Get an expandable boat plug to take them out. Be careful they get brittle and can break if you are rough with them.

You should consider replacing the tubes also, especially the leaking tubes you are removing to replace the "O" rings on.

Thank's a lot for these informations. Yes I planned to replace the plugs and I already bought the boat plug. I did'nt try anything yet until the parts arrive. I will triple check the tubes to be sure they are intact and replace if necessary.
Thank you very much again
