PMS Failure When Installing A New Battery

PMS Failure When Installing A New Battery
Since installing a new battery in my 2006 Porsche 911 I have a PMS failure message and the steering wheel cluster (blinkers, wipers...) don't work. Has anyone else had this type of issue? Can this be fixed with a scan tool or do I need to bring it in to the mechanic?

Have you tried driving it? PSM will throw a fault after hard reset (battery change) for loss of steering wheel calibration.

Yes, I drove it for about 20 min. but the PSM failure message and the blinkers and wipers still don't work. All the fuses look to be OK.

I'd pull each fuse and inspect. Try to check the easy stuff first.

The rest will probably require a PIWIS if there is a coding issue. I don't see how changing the battery could result in damaging the multi-function switch in the column.

I wonder if this is relay connected. Might check that as well. They might be on the same relay.

So I just drove the car for about a 1/2 hour, still no change.
I unplugged and inspected every fuse and there were no issues.
Hey Tonythetarga, is the relay your speaking about in the top of the fuse panel?
Does anyone have a recommendation for which scan tool to buy? I was looking at the icarsoft POR 2.

So I took the car out for about a 1/2 hour ride and the PSM error is still there.
Cnavarro: I took all the fuses out and inspected them there was 1 blown fuse that I replaced but it had nothing to do with the PSM or steering cluster. Do you have any suggestions on a good scan tool? I was looking at the icarsoft POR 2.
Tonythetarga: is the relay you mentioned the one at the top of the fuse panel?
Thanks!!

Lead acid, AGM, Li-ion? Not all batteries are equal.
Disconnect it for a few minutes, then reconnect. Make sure that the steering wheel is straight with no key in the ignition when/if you disconnect. Did battery or a charger or jumper wires ever get connected reversed polarity?

And remember to be really, really nice to her during PMS or you could be in a world of hurt.

Evidently it is not unusual.

Thanks for all the help. Unfortunately with the snowy weather here in NY I have not been able to do much more. I'm still wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good scan tool.

Did you try turning the wheels all of the way right and then all of the way left then re-centering with the engine running?

OK so yesterday I tried starting the car and turning the wheel all the way to the right then all the way to the left and re-centering then drove it for a few minutes. Still no luck. Could this be a relay problem? the only relay I know of is in the fuse box, are there any others?

PMS is followed in later years by MentalPause. Once you get the Porsche out of the garage, most of the time it isn't allowed back in.

PSM failure warning CLEARED

thanks to the above info, I got this resolved. I was installing a new radio headunit and so had disconnected the battery. PSM failure warning came up right away after reconnecting and starting up. I straightened the steering wheel, disconnected battery, waited a few minutes, reconnected. Then I did the full right turn/full left turn thing with the steering wheel, and drove slowly up the street for a few minutes. Warning cleared.

Thank you!

I had a similar problem with a 91 964 MyBalanceNow, since the battery was new I removed an amplifier and other aftermarket stereo equipment, the problem persisted.
I checked all grounds etc.....
Mark at Performance Independent Porsche found two issues
1) Bad Battery
2) Wrong size battery for the car
never had a problem since....
