Not true, at least in Canada. I owned a Dodge Ram Ecodiesel and I kept track of exact fuel mileage, depreciation, DEF and maintenance costs.
The ecodiesel was just shy of $4000 more than the gas version. But, when I sold it the truck was sold very fast, and brought me about $2000 more than what I would get for a gas truck.
After I sold the diesel (private truck) I bought a new GMC V8 for the shop. With the 4 cylinder cut off and such. Again, we are keeping a close eye on fuel millage so we have comparable data.
At the time I was towing my race trailer (about 5000 lbs) and this is where the diesel shines. About half the mileage compared to the GMC, and it even beat the F350 we had in a long shot. I make the same trip to the track many times a year (600 km round trip) with and without a trailer. This also gives a very good idea about fuel consumption.
Here's some real life data from our trips to the track (from the pump and odometer, I don't trust the fuel economy meter in the truck. In mpg
Dodge Ecodiesel 2018 : 31 and 23 (tow)
GMC 1500 2018: 21 and 8.5 (tow)
Ford F350 2007 : 19 and 10 (tow)
BMW 328d 2014: 41
Mercedes GLK 2014: 39.7
Funny this is that my 45 ft Prevost Mhome with a 550 hp DD60 uses less fuel than the GMC with a trailer. go figure...
