It seems to be like you answered the problem...I would go with new springs, if you add more foam, it will still be low and you will be sitting on the ground. Order new springs and see how they are when you first get them....you should be able to tell immediately the difference from a 50 year old worn spring to new springs --simply put some new foam on them as soon as you get it--nothing permanent as this point and see the difference. test it first before you go all in with the installation.
