I'd suggest the newest technology... an 802.11a Access Point, which can provide up to 54MB throughput....they may even provide a "Turbo" mode to enhance performance. DLink, Linksys and Netgear are good low cost manufacturers. I recently saw good prices a Costco for a nice setup.
Also, consider the following:
If the signal must go through walls it is better to talk straight through to the access point as opposed to a diagonal path. If going through a standard wall on a diag the thicknes can be multiplied MANY times, therefore greatly degrading signal strength.
Wireless phones can compromise or totally kill the wireless network connection if on the same frequency.
You can add an external antenna to help boost the signal.
