I think of the FV system as an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, electronically controlled using a simple PVM signal. It can used for more than just emissions with an updated controller such as the one Andrew is looking at. Adding more sensors is possible as well.
Last I checked, these hobby ECU's were relatively cheap and yes, this is on my project list someday !
