DME fault codes

I have Wayne's two books; great resource. My '85 E30 with 6 cyl and 5 speed (205K miles) has been acting a bit woozy-hesitating and stumbling on acceleration.
Does the gas pedal method work with the M-tronic 1.0 for reading fault codes? I can't get it to.

No - Stomp method only works with a DME of 173 or later. (Motronic 1.3)

Give me more of a description and maybe I can help you diagnose..

Thanks, I thought there was a limit to those older units.

I am continuing to diagnose it. One item is I use a K&N air filter and the mass airflow sensor is just downstream. People have said to clean it with special cleaner and this might be it.

I also just adjusted the valves and I'm getting a "tick, tick, tick" but it runs smoothly, just givee me the hesitation. Do I need to re-adjust the valves?

Without knowing specifics - make sure you have no vacuum leaks - the M20 engine will run poorly when a leak is present. A smoke machine is the best tool to diagnose and find the leak... if you don't have access to one - I run a vacuum gauge to determine if i have a leak..

A good running M20 sounds like a sewing machine... which makes knowing when to adjust valves a little tricky.. For me the sewing machine sound gets more pronounced, it sounds a bit more diesel ish.. a much louder ticking.. If you just adjusted the valves - you are probably ok, its a fairly simple procedure.
