I have two unrelated issues that I need suggestions for. Can anyone help out with some ideas?
1. The LED illumination on the display of the stereo (97 328is) is out. When I purchased the car (a little over a year ago), it was only illuminating half as bright as it should be, & every now and then would go to full brightness for a short period of time. Now, it is completely out, & will intermittently go back to that 1/2 brightness for a short period of time. Is there anything I can do from my end (ie. loose connections, ect.), or do I just have to live with it? Can the unit be worked on, or does it need to be replaced? It is the factory unit with a factory 6 disc CD changer, so I'd really like to keep it if at all possible, but with no illumination it's kinda a pain. 2. The LED illumination on the odometer display intermittently drops off. This situation is funny because when it happens the bottom half of the numbers will disappear, & the reading will shift from 'miles' to 'KM'. Sometimes if I press the reset button on the trip meter, it will correct the problem and other times it persists. Is there something from a connection stand point that can be adjusted, or does the entire dash have to be removed? If the digital reading on the odometer drops off all together, does the vehicles computer automatically save the miles data? What is the best procedure for correcting this problem? Thanks Folks.

This is a new one to me as well. I'll call my guy at the local BMW dealer and see if he knows anything about it.

Actually there are bulbs in the instrument cluster. Fading of the odometer or whatever have you, is probably because you have to replace a bulb which requires you to take out your instrument cluster. I had to change the bulb of my digital clock display because it was out.
Now I am trying to figure out why my all the lights in the climate control section is off...including all four knobs to control the climate..that might have bulbs too, but i guess i have to take it out and see. Good luck. |

The only lighting that is giving me trouble is the display on head unit cassette deck. Unfortunately, this display is not illuminated by a single bulb. Possibly a wire harness?

I'm pretty sure most of the dashboard stuff is illuminated by bulbs, not LEDS, which is good because they are easier to replace...the hard part is getting to them. I've messed around with the computer display and there are 4 small bulds in there that twist into place, mounted in a small plastic screw like connector...I;d assume climate control, radio, speedo are similar..

MIKEYZ325, the odometer is LED lit. The actual cluster may be bulbs, but the actual 'miles' display is not.
