BMW Roundel 91 318i Hood latch question

My hood latch will not click and secure the hood. Any suggestions? I used lithium grease, and liquid wrench but it will not latch, although the hasp moves. The cable feels a bit slack but there is enough return force to reposition the release.
Thanks

Arte you talking about the catch on the hood or the release handle inside the car?

Good question, I mentioned both but maybe I wasn't too clear. The latch on the engine compartment is what is not working. I just found the bolts for removing it (but it's like 10 degrees outside and I'm feeling a bit lazy at the moment). It this a common problem with an easy fix or just a problem that needs to be fixed with a new part?

I would try re-adjusting the cable for the release. Sounds like it may be too tight.

Just an update, it's fixed. I removed the latch from the vehicle and after pooping off the plastic cover, found the pivot point for the half of the latch that is connected to the cable and spring totally rusted shut. After drilling out the rusted bolt, polishing and lubing with moly grease, I installed a little nut/bolt in place of the rusted bolt. Works great now.
