diff. output bearing

Hello
I was doing some checking around and I read an article about E30 differential troubleshooting. Article said a common problem is output bearing wear indicated by a hum or whine starting at 3000-4000 rpm, almost disappears at high speed. Changes when driving over bumps. They also said this bearing could go another 50,000 or miles without total fail. Previous owner says noise has been there 80,000 miles. This fits my 318i problem.I have an auto trans. Here come the dumb questions. Where are the output bearing or bearings? Are they talking in the trans. or diff. and could I buy these bearings and replace myself. Thanks for any help.

Mark
By the way I think I'm getting hooked on BMWs'

I'm guessing there talking about the bearings in the side of the diff. for the axles? If so, are they replacable without complete rebuild?
