ICV cleaning Disaster!!!

I decide to clean my ICV, so I take it out and leave it soaking in Isopropyl then I took a q-tip and start cleaning the insides lots of grime and dirt is coming out and I am quite happy. Then disaster strikes the cotton part of the q-tip gets stuck inside the ICV. I can see the stupid cotton bud stuck inside but I can’t pull it out, I try tweezers, pins, bent wire but no luck. Then I get really frustrated and try to pry the ICV open, the thing just breaks in my hands. Every thing just comes flying out, all the wire inside the ICV break now I am scared. But I think what the hey, now that the thing is all broke and open let see is I can clean it good on the inside and see if I can make it work. Well after some more cleaning, drying, soldering and super gluing the thing back together I put it in the car and to my amazement it works and my idle is much smoother too. I guess I just plain old lucked out but then my check engine light comes on but the code displayed is just an old code for the AC compressor and the car is still running great, just with the check engine light on.

Just for future reference, the best way to clean out these valves is with a good brake cleaner and some compressed air.

I wish i knew this earlier. I read about 10 post at Bimmer Central msg board at http://bimmer.roadfly.org and every body over there recommended soaking the thing in alcohol then using the Q-tips then using a dryer on the fan setting to dry all the alcohol. Oh well you live and learn.

ALos, you dont want to open them up at all. Usually, if cleaning the inside doesnt fix it, the valve must be replaced.
