BMW Roundel Replacing Speakers

I have a 2002 M3 conv, w/o the harmon kardon system , and was wondering if anybody had replaced the factory speakers. I am looking to replace my speakers and add a subwoofer and I need some advice. Thanks

I replaced all my speakers with MB Quart components. Two 6 1/2 's in the doors, 1 1/2 tweeters in the pods, two 6 x 9 's on the rear deck in custom enclosures, and a JBL 18 inch subwoofer in the trunk. All driven by a 1000 watt amplifier. MUCH better than the stock speakers. It BUMPS!

Do you know if MB Quart makes a large diameter subwoofer? My JBL is starting to fade out. I fear it will be gone soon.

i dont believe mb quart makes a large diameter sub, i would personally go with the image dynamics, they are the best and the way to go. there sound quality is incredible, i have tried many different subs and none even compare.

Ineed recommendations also for speakers. I have 95 325i conv. and I am not sre of the speaker size in it. It ahs components in it and actually only the speakers in the kick panel are blown. I think they are 5.25. I was thinking instead of replacing the entire component I can just replace the 5.25. Can anyone give me any info or suggestions.

mikey,

the stock size is indeed 5.25 Do you have the premium steroe in your car? If you do, you will have the speaker pods for the tweeters on the doors.

The problem with 5.25's is that you really can't get a good bass response out of them. When BMW designed the stereo system for these cars, they really didnt put the greatest speakers in there. I ended up putting 6 1/2 inch woofers in the door panels. This was a bit difficult as i had to cut holes in the lower door panels, then calculate the exact position of the speaker so it did not interfere with the operation of the power windows.

I also insulated the inside of the door panel with bituthene. (this stuff is a industrial waterproofing sheeting used on roofs.) Insulation helps the tonal characteristics of the speaker, and really brightens up the sound. Most people use a product called Dynamat for the very same reason. I prefer the bituthene, as it adheres to surfaces better, is thicker than Dynamat and is cheaper. Plus it inhibits rust and corrosion.

Once in, they add to the apperance of the door panel in my opinion. I lost a bit of room in the map pockets on either side, but the bass response really makes up for it.
