325i engine replacement

I have a 1993 325i. This is a dumb question, but are there any modifications to put a 1995 325i engine in it. Please let me know.

Im a little confused, are you asking if you can put the later VANOS equipped engine into the early car? I'm sure it can be done, but it's something that really would not be worth the swap for a only small gain in performance. The real swap is to put the M3 motor in there. Major power increase, but the engine is expensive. As far as putting it in, i think you would have to transfer over all the ecu equipment and harnesses. I dont know specifics, but i believe it will simply bolt in.

I also think i remember hearing something about the early engines being preferrable to the VANOS engines. Wayne had something about this.

Many people put M3 engines and I think they fit fine. People Ive talked to prefer to get a engine from a 95 M3 cause those are still OBDI (and thus more receptive to modifications, tuning, etc). Engines after 95 are OBDII. Some people go as far as getting a 95+ M3 engine (the 3.2L OBDII ones) and then doing a OBDI conversion on them.

Why not sell the car, save some cash you'd spend on a M3 engine ($3-6K probably, plus install, etc) and get an M3? Seems like it save yourself a big headache in long run...

I have heard that in order to put the M3 motor in there, you have to fabricate custom engine mounts.

Also, does anyone know if the motor will bolt up to the stock tranny, or do you have to use an E36 tranny? I imagine it would be beneficial to use ther tranny as well because it has already been geared to work with the M3 motor.

I am also curious if you have to modify the driveshaft in any way.
