fuel pump

I plan to replace my external fuel pump and fuel filter this weekend. Should I do this with the fuel tank empy or doesn' t it really matter? Also is there anything else I should replace while I'm under there(fuel lines, clamps, etc.). I've done many repairs on my BMW's but have never repalced a fuel pump. Any tips would be much appreciated.

Do it with the tank empty, or at least near empty. What year and model car do you have? I can give you some tips if I know what car you have. I'm assuming a 325eta.

I would reccomend draining the tank completely, then disconnect the banjo fitting going into the pump from the tank, then disconnect the metal line from the pump to the fuel accumulator. Also, very important, disconnect the battery before you do this. Gasoline can short the leads to the pump and start a fire. Im pretty sure you cant clamp these lines shut, so it's important to have the tank empty. It should'nt be a problem anyway, as there is a supply pump in the tank which has a check valve that prevents fuel from going out. still, there will be residual fuel inside the pump and accumulator, so wear goggles while under there and lay out a tarp or tray to catch the fuel.
