BMW Roundel Running engine w/o exhaust for short drive

Had to remove my exhaust (while replacing the driveshaft flex disk) and broke two of the six studs.

Anyone know how to get these studs out and replace them? Tried hitting with hammer.

I am thinking about driving it without the exhaust installed to a local muffler/exhaust shop. They probably break these off all the time and know how to deal with it.

MY QUESTION: will it hurt my car to drive it to the exhaust shop and back for them to replace the studs while only the headers are installed (no exhaust system)? If it is only a matter of re-setting computer codes I have a reset tool and so that should be okay.

jh

No, but you will go deaf. When i was replacing my exhaust, I turned my engine on just for the hell of it. BOY was that loud. I didnt even rev it either. Be sure no cops are around, or they'll EASILY spot you, or shall i say, HEAR you!!

As for damage, there is none, except to the environment and your ears. Thats about it.

Agreed.

As for removing the studs, here are some suggestions...

I'm not sure what they look like, but there are various tools on the market for removing broken bolts, screws, etc. Sears has a bunch of them. For an example, go to http://www.sears.com and enter "bolt out" in the search field.

There is also an attachment that you can buy that goes on an electric drill that will essentially cut off a bolt, stud, etc.

You could also try to drill out the stud.

You DO NOT want to drive without an exhaust. You can burn exhaust valves this way.

Can you please explain this with more detail, or point me to a site that explains how and why this happens.
