Check engine light
Hey I got a sittuation on my hands & looking for any advice on what the problem might be. I just bought a '99 M3 w/ 47k miles and just this evening just cruising around running some errands and after pulling out of the drive-thru I sort of stomped on the throttle to experience some bavarian blast and the check engine light comes on about a mile later and wondering what might be the root cause of this. I read in the BMW 3 series guide by Jeremy Walton that all E36 cars in general have engine management self diagnostics and continues to say that on '92-'95 cars, quickly flooring the the accelerator 5 times will initiate a fault read out and also wonder if anybody has had this problem on their E-36 M3's.

when you say blast, do you mean something sounded like something blew up?

No. actually what I meant by blast is rapid acceleration. There wasnt any noise or anything out of the ordinary. I just basically got on the throttle & about a mile later check engine light is on. And still is. I bought the car w/ the CPO warranty frm BMW but was just curious as to what may have caused this. I'm sure there could be a plethora of reasons.

I'd be willing to bet its one of two things. First make sure the gas cap is on properly. Second it may be an oxygen sensor gone bad.

You are exactly right on the second one. It's an oxygen sensor. How many oxygen sensors do I have?
