Its most likely the bulb, its a really easy fix. The bulb cost $3.50 at my stealership, it may be available at radio shack or something. My method of removing the OBC is different from some, but I find it easier.

To remove the OBC, take either a flat head screw driver or an old credit card of some sort. Insert the flat object into the crevice surrouding the OBC and gently try to push the obc out. Eventually, you'll be able to remove it by constantly pushing at all sides. On the top you'll see the 4 different bulbs, 3 for the display, 1 for the clock. Using the flat head screwdriver, turn the bulb 180 degrees (not sure either clockwise or counter, shouldnt be too hard to figure out) and it'll pop out. Replace it and slowly push back the OBC. I think this topic has been covered, do a search and you'll find the original thread. Have fun, its an easy fix.

I had the same problem. I posted a thread on this earler.
pull the computer dash out (there's a notch underneath to trigger). You'll see four bulbs (12v, 1.2w I believe) in a horizontal row. I though it was a 90 degree counterclockwise turn to remove (maybe I'm mistaken). You can do it with your fingers, no need for a screwdriver (on my 95 325i anyway).

I didn't get around to buying a new bulb, so what I did was swap the clock bulb(bad one) with the good bulb to the left of it. THe display works fine, and is only slightly dimmed on the right hand side - if a long message displays.
It's an interim solution until you can get a new bulb.

Champeny, I did the exact same thing. The dealer gave me a non functional bulb, so i said screw it and just took the one from the side and put it in. I mean, i rarely ever use the OBC anyways, the clock is much more important. I crashed into the car in front one time while I was trying to get out my phone to check the time. Thank goodness it was really slow and no damage at all. But it sure scared me!

Im not sure of the actual wattage for the bulb, but i know you can get them at any local Fry's or Radio Shack.
