engine surging

I have a 1992 325is. When I am accelerating, there is a surging. You can feel it and see the mpg gauge moving up and down with the surging. The check engine light is not on, but I performed the 4 digit code test which had the code 1444. I believe this is the "fine" code. What could this be? I have had the car 3 years and it has always had this problem.

The other problem I have is the system is flashing "check control inact". What is this and what should I do to correct this?

Thanks!
David

Thanks for your help! The O2 sensor cured the surging. I'm finally able to enjoy the car the way it should be.

Thanks again,
David

Yes, in my case too- the O2 sensor. Mine was noticable while the cruise was set. Although I didn't feel the surge, my mpg needle on the panel would bob back and forth. I thought it was a vaccum line, but the problem went away after the O2 change.
