Lightend flywheel
Would it be a good idea and/or are there any advantages to lightening a flywheel on a 1.8L engine?
Thanks, Dave

Are you talking about running a stock motor with a lightened flywheel? What other things are you planning on doing to the motor? That would be the key...

Just a stock rebuild motor for now.
I have a Porsche 914 that I am restoring and I am also helping my brother rebuild his '83 320i engine. Do you have any suggestions for some good mods to the motor (1.8L). As of now we are planning on replacing the main and rod bearings, timing chain, piston rings, valve springs and all new gaskets. We are also going to have the engine completely balanced. Is there anything else you would recomend to replace/do for a rebuild?? Thanks, Dave

Im not sure i would get a lightened flywheel for this motor. It wont do much for the motor except help it to spin up faster, but you probably wont even be able to tell any difference.
Giv eme an idea of what you expect out of this motor and I can give you some suggestions on how to build it. |

I am hoping to get a very reliable engine, it would also be nice if I could get some more reliable power.
I am new to the BMW's. I have been doing air cooled VW and Porsche for a while now. Guess i need to figure out what is available for BMW mods. Larger engine/block replacements? Better heads? Larger stroke w/1.8L block? Better cam for FI? Thanks, Dave

Unfortunatley there really isnt much you can do to boost the power without resorting to as custom turbo setup or something like that. I would maybe reccommend changing the cam and going with a little higher compression pistons.

What cam do you recomend for a stock FI.
Are there higher comp. pistons with the same bore? Or do you have to replace the crank/rods as well. Thanks, Dave

Once again, choosing the right cam depends on what pistons you are running, how you want the car to perform.
Also keep in mind that this is a motor that not many people soup up, so you may be limited as to what you actually CAN do with the engine. I would suggest talking to some of the folks over at Korman Autowerks or Metric mechanic. They build custom motors, and may have more insight that I can give you. Sorry i cant be of more help. |
