Clutch Diagnostics

Vehicle is a 95 M3 with about 55k miles.

Customer installed a new aftermarket clutch kit and complains that the clutch pedal is way to light and that shifting into gears is very hard. He has to start the car on 1st gear to get moving. Once moving the customer complain that it is still hard to shift on other gears.

The clutch slave cylinder has been replaced and pressure bled. Sympton is still present.

What could be the cause?

Pressure Plate?
Clutch disc facing the wrong direction (which I think it is)?

Pelican Parts Clutch Problems.........

I’m sorry but what I’m about to say may not be the answer you were hoping for. I’ve experienced this problem in the past and the solution was simple: USE OEM PARTS.

Sometimes aftermarket specs could be slightly off due to inconsistencies in either the reproductions or manufacturing stages thus leaving the weight on the QC department (if they have one). I’ve wasted money on 3 aftermarket clutches only to figure out that the OEM had the perfect fitment and operation. I was even surprise because one of the final clutches was that of good quality and cost almost double of the OEM replacement.

Live and learn, but I’m not going to guarantee that this is your exact problem, only a guess, not much else I could recommend…….

Have you checked the clutch master clinder or the check valve? Sounds like the disc is not being moved far enough away from the pressure plate. This would cause a light pedal sensation, as well as make it hard to shift.

Clutch slave cylinder has been replaced already and problem was still there. I emailed the customer to check to see if he had the pressure plate installed correctly and I have not heard from him since.

I have no information about the flywheel wether it is stock, a lightweight version or if it has been resurfaced. Customer told me he's going to install it himself but last time I talked to him he said it at a dealer ( or independant shop).

Sounds like th only problem here is that he doesnt have enough clearance betwee the clutch disc and the pressure plate.

Perhaps they burned out the clutch?
